Ramblers
Relay Canal Walk from Reading to Bristol 8-15 May 2010

To celebrate the Ramblers 75th, and the Kennet and Avon Canals 200 years of history, a Relay Canal Walk is being held from 8-15th May 2010. The walk will be led by various Ramblers groups through which the canal passes. The baton will contain photocopies of various documents relating to the founding of the Ramblers and the opening of the canal.
Everyone is invited to take part in this celebratory walk. Join us at one of the named points along the route and walk with us for as little or long as you like. Many of the named points are accessible by public transport and most have nearby pubs, cafés, shops or restaurants where refreshments can be obtained. There will be mini celebratory events and brief talks about the history of the canaland and its surrounds.
The canal winds its way 87 miles from Reading to Bath, before joining the River Avon and linking to Bristol. This 200 year old feat of engineering, originally built as a trade route, now supports a thriving leisure industry following a record £25 million restoration project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The canal is a diverse wildlife habitat, home to an impressive array of historic industrial architecture, a boating route, a long distance path, a holiday destination and much more to many thousands of people who visit each year. It is managed and maintained by British Waterways in partnership with the Kennet & Avon Canal Trust, local authorities and numerous volunteer groups.
