Ramblers
I will also be 75 in 2010!
A friend invited me to join a Sunday ramble with the Home Counties Ramblers in 1961 and I've been hooked ever since!
I served as club secretary for many years and met Vic Morecroft, a stalwart of the Ramblers London Area Committee - he had flown a Tiger Moth aircraft in the First World War. I used to enjoy the Railway Rambles from East Croydon station to Sussex and beyond, with tea organised on one memorable occasion by the Womens Institute! All our club walks finished with afternoon tea, as well as a short pub stop for lunch.
On moving to Wiltshire, I joined the Ramblers Salisbury and South Wiltshire Group, serving again as secretary and chairman, and attending Area meetings and the National Annual General Meeting. In 1996 I was invited to join a group which launched Doorstep Walks in Salisbury and I have been leading health walks ever since. I am now a member of the most northerly Ramblers group in England, the Berwick Ramblers, and was secretary for some years.
Over the years I have also enjoyed trips with Ramblers Holidays, Holiday Fellowship and Countrywide Holiday Association. I became a leader for Ramblers Holidays in 1979 and have visited many European countries, sometimes as a leader and latterly as a party member. On one such a holiday, one fit party member had been a Spitfire pilot in the Second World War!
Congratulations to the Ramblers on its 75th Anniversary and thank you to all those enthusiasts at Central Office and beyond whose work makes it all possible. I have enjoyed my rambling life which has kept me fit and I will also be 75 in 2010!
